Create a short magazine in simple black-and-white PDF and make it freeware, so that anyone could print it off. And ask people to print off a bunch and dump them in comics stores. <p><em>Years later, I condensed the idea down to a broadside model, which Alert Nerd adopted and Ectomo experimented with. But it shares the same thing in common — it’s about spitting paper at the other end. It’s also about creating objects where none existed before. </em></p>
<p><em>The broadside, one-sheet model can be broken down a little further. Anyone knows you can fold one sheet into a four-face booklet. You can get even more complicated than that, but, you know, I drink precisely so no-one asks me to do things involving fine motor skills. </em></p>

<p>And all this got my brain cylinders firing.  As intriguing as the concept of a social letter box and micro print on demand is, my initial vision upon hearing the word &#8220;papernet&#8221; wasn&#8217;t just of a box that spurts out paper from a computer.  It was something much larger than that, although I can see how the micro POD could play a part in the larger picture.  No, what I envisioned was this&#8230;</p>
<p>Pieces of paper interconnected creating a vast network of information in what is essentially a low tech paper and ink version of the internet.  A steampunk version of the world wide web.</p>

<p>More than just a library (although a library could certainly serve as an information hub) this network exists as the result of each piece of paper linking to another, whether it is through the binding formatting a stack of individual pages into a codex, or footnotes or a bibliography linking to other works, or other forms of recommendations.  We see this in comics through letters pages, and editorial comments, and in-story footnotes referencing earlier issues of the serial format itself.  We can even see this in music via insert pamphlets archiving lyrics, and photos and other related art and articles.</p>
<p>The key element here in the forming of a papernet, is the linking of one piece of paper containing information, to another.</p>
<p>Not only does this papernet exist in the real world as paper and ink artifacts, if Internet 2 were to become a reality and net neutrality were lost, perhaps it is this papernet that would fill the gap to become the replacement.  What was old becomes new again.</p>

<p>This is the most interesting series of blogs yet, looking at the indy<br />
publishers fate in today&#8217;s comic world. Why aren&#8217;t more doing this<br />
analysis? (I guess that AiT and Fantagraphics have done it) Most of<br />
the indy books I order are very late and overpriced, similar to a<br />
Marvel product, but a buck more. The books that I get excited about<br />
still are the one that are infrequent, but a good value, and fairly<br />
self-contained (Age of Bronze, Eightball, Optic Nerve, Angry youth<br />
comix). And I really don&#8217;t understand why an indy publisher, or even<br />
Image would do super-heroes anymore (Invincible being the exception).<br />
Marvel and DC are going to do it better!</p>

can&#8217;t imagine a print on demand book ever making it BIG! Because half<br />
the trick to self-publishing is (once you&#8217;ve actually completed a<br />
book) is to get enough copies out there in circulation to make people<br />
aware of it, and get enough readers interested and hooked to buy<br />
enough comics to replace the pay of a &#8220;real&#8221; job.</p>
<p>And while you&#8217;ve got to work a &#8220;real&#8221; job, there is no way to get a<br />
comic out frequently.</p>
<p>And if you resort to print on demand, you are never going to generate<br />
a large enough audience to fuel a full-time career making comics.</p>
<p>I guess for your first crappy comics, print on demand is alright. But<br />
the idea has to be to graduate to a full print run before expecting<br />
any real success I think.</p>
<p>As for Superheroes&#8230; if you&#8217;ve got a great story to tell, why NOT<br />
self-publish your own superhero comic? Sure, you&#8217;re up against a lot,<br />
but that&#8217;s true of all media in all genres. Gotta just go for it.</p>

<p>The economics of publishing is changing. It has already become a fine<br />

the line will get thinner.</p>
<p>If we want to believe that the Internet is going away, and that<br />

component of some sort. Even canceled books have message boards, these<br />

artifact is our paper comics (or related merchandise). The stuff that<br />
is physical. That is limited. That can be destroyed. That takes<br />
some effort to hunt down. That can become COLLECTORS ITEMS!</p>
<p>Otherwise, why not just download everything via BitTorrent?</p>
<p>Well, that&#8217;s a portion of my thoughts.<br />

to be an interesting catch 22. There is a push to create work that<br />
will not appeal to collectors, and yet the collectors may be the ones<br />
to keep the medium alive. The desire to own a physical book, a<br />
tangible &#8220;investment&#8221; if you will (even though, I know, the word<br />
makes people wretch).</p>
<p>That being said, I would probably be inclined to buy a trade on CD or<br />
DVD because there&#8217;s no real collector incentive &#8212; it&#8217;s just<br />
the &#8220;reading copy&#8221; if you will. Well, once I get a laptop, anyway;)</p>

<p>As for collectors; after years of thinking about this stuff, I think<br />
that people who enjoy the work enough to want to own legitimate hard<br />
copy &#8220;first print&#8221; &#8220;collectors item!&#8221; editions of the work and keep<br />
them as artifacts are the ones who we (as creators) should be looking<br />
to for our primary revenue stream. They are ultimately the ones that<br />
will fund our work. Casual readers may be good for a one time cash<br />
infusion, but for any sort of longevity, I think is is the collector<br />
that has to be catered to, who needs to have an interest in your work.<br />
Think of it this way: The people that see a value in what you are<br />
doing are the ones that you should primarily be interested in as a<br />
creator, as opposed to those who see NO value in what you are doing.</p>
<p>Those that see value in you and your work, are the ones that will buy<br />
a copy of the work, or buy a limited edition print, or t-shirt, or<br />
start a Yahoo! Group to discuss your work in their leisure time. They<br />
will keep the work going.</p>
<p>And when I say collectors, I don&#8217;t mean the &#8220;collectors&#8221; that buy 75<br />
polybagged Death of Superman because the TV told them they were going<br />
to go up in value. No, I consider these people an entirely different<br />
beast&#8230; (investors may be a better descriptive word). In this sense<br />
I view collectors as people who like the work enough that they want to<br />
own the work. The complete work. Or at the very least, the few<br />
issues of the work that they actually enjoyed.</p>
<p>Digital copies and web comics may be good as a promotional marketing<br />
tool (get 1 million people reading your comics on the internet, and<br />
I&#8217;ll be you can get 10,000 of them to buy a hard copy, or a t-shirt).<br />
But you really need to be aware that it is the selling of something,<br />
ANYTHING, that is the only way to make a career out of this crazy trade.</p>
<p>Otherwise you&#8217;re just creating your art for free.<br />
Which is fine and all, but good luck keeping a monthly schedule and<br />
paying your mortgage in the process.</p>

<p>Time will tell what artifacts hold any real value. Which kind of ties<br />
this all back to Dave&#8217;s original Blog and Mail points. If you have<br />
3000 people chasing 300 comics, of course the value of those 300<br />
comics will go up due to supply and demand. Comics like Cerebus #1<br />
ARE going to become valuable artifacts because people see value in the<br />
work of Cerebus.</p>
<p>If the entire world decided that there was no value in Cerebus, you<br />
would see those CGC graded Cerebus comics drop in value quicker than<br />
the worst junk bond. But at the moment, that isn&#8217;t the case.</p>
<p>If the audience thinks that a work is worth something, then, as an<br />
artist, you&#8217;ve won half the battle. And no amount of pdfs or<br />
downloading or counterfeits or rip-offs is going to change that.</p>

<p>I once proposed that sealed bags of Superman #75 should be treated<br />
as currency. And that there didn&#8217;t have to acutally be real comics<br />
inside the bag&#8211;just authentic-looking covers over the correct<br />
weight of pages.</p>

then you&#8217;re still describing a flawed system of value (though one it<br />
is possible to play for personal gain at others&#8217; expense).</p>

<p>In this degraded feminist age, I feel the need to point out that<br />
you&#8217;ve made an unintentional double-entendre. &#8220;If an audience<br />
thinks that a work is worth something&#8221; can be taken two ways. The<br />
most common meaning these days is going to be &#8220;If an audience thinks<br />
they can turn the book around for a profit&#8221;, which is the speculator<br />
ponzi scheme. I&#8217;m sure you meant &#8220;If an audience thinks that the<br />
work is worth paying for in order to own it&#8221;, which is the only<br />
thing that makes others&#8217; speculation possible in the first place.</p>
<p>In that latter sense of &#8220;think it&#8217;s worth something&#8221;, perception<br />
becomes reality, because the thing really is worth what you think it<br />
is worth&#8211;to you, anyway. When you, as a creator, make something<br />
that causes others to value it&#8211;something people will willingly work<br />
for or trade value for, then you have created real wealth.</p>

When researching banks and currency, I realized that our whole economic system at the moment is based on fiat currency, which is paper (or electronic) currency backed by nothing!  It used to be backed by gold.  But it isn&#8217;t anymore, and hasn&#8217;t been for a while.  Money only takes on value because we assume that it can be traded for something of value whenever we want to.  But when it comes down to it, it&#8217;s intrinsic value is actually worthless.  What IS of value is our labor (which we trade FOR money).</p>
<p>In the case of comics, when you really get down to it, they are just newsprint with ink on it.  As worthless as the money we use to purchase them.  HOWEVER, since we perceive them as being valuable as a work of art, or as a piece of entertainment, as a rare artifact, or even as an investment &#8211; that is what gives them their value.  At that point it becomes a matter of supply and demand.  If A LOT of people believe that these newsprint pamphlets with ink on them are worth something, and the ratio of people who hold this belief is greater than the number of newsprint pamphlets in existence, then of course the monetary value that these comics are perceived to have is going to go up.</p>
<p>So &#8220;If an audience thinks they can turn the book around for a profit&#8221; or &#8220;If an audience thinks that the work is worth paying for in order to own it&#8221; are (at least in my opinion) equally valid statements.   The only real difference is the motivation for purchasing the work in the first place, but does not (I think) change the concept of &#8220;thinking a work is worth something&#8221;.  In both cases the idea is &#8220;I think this work has value&#8221;.</p>
<p>Same can be said for money (or any other material possessions).</p>
<p>The BIG PICTURE to all of this is that once we&#8217;re dead none of this material stuff really matters anyway&#8230; which becomes a whole other discussion.</p>

<p>You&#8217;re right as far as that goes, of course.</p>
<p>The distinction I was making was that &#8220;I think I can turn this<br />
around for a profit&#8221; is more ephermeral. Stocks, properties,<br />
currencies, etc can suddenly *lose* their value (in that sense) and<br />
it&#8217;s kind of like a game of hot potato where the holder of the<br />
commodity in question who didn&#8217;t unload it quickly enough loses.</p>
<p>Whereas &#8220;I think this thing is worth owning&#8221;, however subjective, is<br />
going to last. It&#8217;s like Howard Roark explains to Gail Wynand<br />
in &#8220;The Fountainhead&#8221;&#8211;once you give to a creation your &#8220;Yes!&#8221;, you<br />
don&#8217;t take it back.</p>
<p>True, you can have an experience like Steve&#8217;s with &#8220;X-Men&#8221; where you<br />
decide something you felt had value no longer has that value to<br />
you. I&#8217;m not saying you can&#8217;t change your mind, and hence your<br />
evaluation. But that evaluation isn&#8217;t going to get changed *for*<br />
you&#8211;out from under you&#8211;by someone else&#8217;s whims.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s what I see as the difference between value as defined by<br />
collectors vs value as defined by speculators.</p>

<p>So yeah. I see that distinction.</p>
<p>It really does all come down to what you, as an individual, believe<br />
has worth. Readers, Collectors, and Speculator/Investors are all<br />
going believe different things.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><img hspace="10" align="left" src="http://i115.photobucket.com/albums/n286/Ultraist/charlie_brown.jpg" />In 1966 my grandfather bought a piece of land up north on Lake Simcoe and built a cottage. It is the place where my father and two uncles would spend the better part of their summers. Over the years, on the wooden shelf across from the original bathroom, a collection of books accumulated. There were fiction novels, readers digest books, and paperbacks reprinting newspaper daily strips. It was those paperbacks, to my knowledge, that were my first exposure to comics. This would have been around the year 1981. I would read, and re-read these books all summer. And I didn&#8217;t realize how much these books effected me, until looking back at them for this Archeology Project. It hit me how much of those books I took with me. The earliest influence in, what I perceive as a cartoon, can be directly linked to these books.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.peanuts.com/comics/peanuts/archive/index.html"><strong>PEANUTS:</strong></a> For many people this remains the ultimate comic strip, and is the first one I remember.  Cute cartoons locked in neurotic behaviour and deep philosophical debate. There is a naivety coupled with a cynical, pessimistic overtone throughout the strips, which is something I have always found comforting, and as a matter of fact, drawn to. I didn&#8217;t give too much thought to any of this at the time. All I knew is over the summer, I&#8217;d eat this stuff up.  Looking back at them now, I see all the building blocks that, in my mind, are a prerequisite to making a  great comic.</p>
<p><img hspace="10" align="right" src="http://i115.photobucket.com/albums/n286/Ultraist/andy_capp.jpg" /><a href="http://www.creators.com/comics/andy-capp.html"><strong>ANDY CAPP:</strong></a> I remember my 7 year old brain grappling with the English slang in this comic. Looking at it now, Reginald Smythe probably influence my &#8220;cartoony&#8221; art style more than I realized. If you put Andy Capp in a trench coat and oversized sneakers, you would pretty much have Spy Guy. Also, for the longest time, I would draw the police officers in the Spy Guy Universe with their caps pulled over their eyes. Ever since Bootleg, I wondered why I have the need to do this. It was a question I could never answer myself. But looking at these books, I think I have figured out why. Something in my psyche continues to tell me this is the way it&#8217;s supposed to be done.</p>
<p>In addition to the comic strip collections on the wooden shelf across from the bathroom, there was another stash of comics. They were in a cardboard box, that smelt of must and mildew and newsprint.</p>
<p>That was the place where the comicbooks were.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The second part of the Star Wars double header was it&#8217;s sequel: The Empire Strikes Back.  The film premiered on May 21, 1980.  Lucas financed the film himself through loans and the earnings he had made from the box-office success of Star Wars.</p>

<p>Lucas offered the role of director to Irvin Kershner, who had been one of his professors at the USC School of Cinema-Television. As well as handing off the director&#8217;s chair, Lucas also hired Lawrence Kasdan and Leigh Brackett to write the film&#8217;s screenplay based on his own original story treatment.</p>
<p>The success of Empire builds on the previous installment of Star Wars.<br />
It is the first we see of the force ability to levitate objects.  The first we see the ghost of Obi-Wan Kenobi.  The first we see of the two masters of the force, both Yoda and the Emperor.  The Star Destroyer is one up&#8217;ed by the Super Star Destroyer.</p>
<p>It takes the foundation, and builds on it.  Takes the drama to new, more extreme levels.</p>
<p>And the AT-AT Walkers&#8230;<br />
The AT-AT, more than anything else, is the thing that got my interest in animation.  I remember telling my parents that I wanted an AT-AT Walker from Kenner.  They told me to save my money.  So that&#8217;s exactly what I did.  Together with my brother, we pooled our resources into a little tupperware container that was to become our AT-AT fund.  In what seemed like years later (in 7 year old time) we eventually had enough for the big purchase.  And it was worth every penny.</p>

<p>Robert McKee accurately writes in his script writing book STORY: <em>When Darth Vader reveals that he&#8217;s Luke&#8217;s father, we rush back to the scenes in which Ben Kenobi and Yoda are greatly troubled over Luke&#8217;s command of the Force, fearing, we presume, for the young man&#8217;s safety. We now realize that Luke&#8217;s mentors were actually concerned for his soul, dreading that his father would seduce him to the &#8220;dark side&#8221;&#8230;<br />
When Darth Vader reveals himself to Luke, this pays off multiple setups strung back through two films. In an instant, however, this also becomes the setup for Luke&#8217;s next action. What will the young hero do?</em></p>
<p>Which brings us to another childhood memory. Riding along in our family&#8217;s blue station wagen, we got into a heavy philosophical debate with my father on why Darth Vader couldn&#8217;t be Luke&#8217;s father. My arguement was &#8220;Obi-Wan wouldn&#8217;t lie to Luke&#8221;.</p>
<p>It was the ending of Empire Strikes Back that completely blew my mind. Where the good guys predictably win in the first film, it is the bad guys unpredictably deliver a serious ass kicking here. This was revolutionary.  The good guys lose.  Something about this clicked with my cynical young mind.</p>
<p>And yet, Empire also had the potential in becoming a train-wreck.<br />
Originally, Lucas had written an exchange between Han Solo and Princess Leia to read as Leia saying to Han &#8220;I love you.&#8221; with Han replying &#8220;I love you too.&#8221; Harrison Ford felt that the character was not being taken advantage of, Kershner agreed. After many different takes with several different versions, Kershner shouted to have the cameras begin filming and telling Ford to improvise. Solo&#8217;s line was, in this moment, changed to &#8220;I know.&#8221;</p>
<p>During production, great secrecy surrounded the fact that Darth Vader was Luke&#8217;s father. Like the rest of the crew, David Prowse, who spoke all of Vader&#8217;s lines during filming, was given a false page that contained dialogue which differed from what is heard in the film. The famous line had been changed to &#8220;Obi-Wan killed your father&#8221;. Until the film premiered, only George Lucas, Irvin Kershner, Mark Hamill and James Earl Jones knew what would really be said.</p>

<p>While Return Of The Jedi was a romp of a wild ride, it never did impact me the way Star Wars, and Empire Strikes Back did.  The epic scope of the space battles, and Jabba&#8217;s Palace and Speeder chase captivated me.  The Luke and Leia thing seemed to come out of nowhere.  Harrison Ford suggested to Lucas that Solo should die in this film, which would have given it the emotional threat the movie was otherwise lacking.  In hindsight there are elements there that show the beginning of the decline of the Star Wars legacy.  Don&#8217;t even get me started on the prequels.</p>
<p>This post is another work in progress, and I&#8217;ll continue to muck with is as inspiration hits.</p>

At 2 and a half years of age I wasn&#8217;t old enough to remember this event.  It was 3 years later when I watched the film in the theater during a double header.  Star Wars is one of my earliest memories, and easily my first obsession.  It became a foundation of my intenal psyche and the corner stone of my imagination.</p>

<p>Vividly I remember sitting in that theater.  Watching the opening fanfare and text scroll, followed by the emense Star Destroyer.  The act climaxed in a wave of both shock-and-awe, and terror, when Darth Vader boarded the Corriliean Corvette through the smoke and carnage with his squadron of Stormtroopers.</p>

<p>The paradox of past and future, sci-fi and fantasy.<br />
&#8220;a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away&#8230;&#8221;</p>
<p>The reason the first movie resonated was because the issues were timeless. They are real.<br />
A used future.  An evil empire.  A young farm boy answering the hero&#8217;s call and becoming jedi like his father before him.  The force.  The dark side.  This film contained everything to captivate a young mind.</p>
<p>Han Solo became the archtype of cool.<br />
Obi-Wan of wisdom.<br />
Luke of hero.<br />
R2-D2 and C-3P0 of comedy.<br />
Leia as heroin.<br />
Vader of capital &#8220;V&#8221; Villain.</p>
<p>Star Wars became a common reference point for an entire generation. I still use the three act structure of the Star Wars films as a reference point to Real Life.  The hero&#8217;s journey.</p>
<p>&#8220;Hokey religions and ancient weapons are no match for a good blaster by your side kid&#8221; &#8211; Han Solo.</p>
<p>Cool &#8230; only to find out those words aren&#8217;t quite true. Like real life.  I have more to type here, but have to find the right words&#8230;<br />
Kenner Products obtained the rights to produce action figures and playsets for the Star Wars trilogy from 1977-1984.</p>
<p>Again, one of my earliest memories is waking up Christmas morning in 1980 to find a Millenium Falcon under my stocking. (A Death Star playset under my brothers).</p>

<p>Star Wars facinated me, and digging deeper into the &#8220;behind the scenes&#8221; treasure trove of information regarding the making of Star Wars.  The incredible art of <a href="http://www.ralphmcquarrie.com/galleries/SW/sw.html">Ralph McQuarrie</a>, spacecrafts built from old model kits, starfields superimposed over bluescreens, overexposure mattes to create the blade of the lightsabers, makeup and prosthetics to create robots and aliens.  This, more than anything, convinced me that building universes is something I wanted to do.</p>
<p>The special effects in Star Wars is what inspired me to do effects for feature films.</p>
<p>In later years, I was fascinated to learn how close this film came to becoming a total train wreck.  The movie was saved by the Academy Award winning editting of Paul Hirsch, Richard Chew and Marcia Lucas. George Lucas suffered a breakdown and was diagnosed with hypertension and exhaustion.  ILM blew half of its total budget on only four shots.  In the original script Darth Vader wasn&#8217;t even supposed to have a helmet, something that was added because McQuarrie thought Vader was going to be in space, he&#8217;d need a helmet to breath.<br />
And yet, everything came together to become one of the greatest feats in filmaking.</p>
<p>This generation has had to suffer the butchery called the &#8220;Special Edition&#8221;.</p>
<p>Though purists can check out OCPmovies release of the &#8220;<a href="http://www.originaltrilogy.com/forum/messageview.cfm?catid=9&#038;threadid=2270">Classic Edition</a>&#8221; &#8211; This is the theatrical release of Star Wars, remastered and digitally enhanced for DVD. This is Star Wars the way we remembered it.</p>
