New Weapon For My Arsenal

In preparation for SPY GUY #1, I picked up a new weapon to add to my arsenal of comic making tools…

Tracing paper! Dave Sim has been talking about his creative process on Cerebus (not to mention selling his roughs on eBay) and it got me thinking about trying to mimic that workflow. On SPUD & HARRY I experimented with transferring my thumbnail roughs onto the illustration board using a pencil rub, and was really pleased with the results. However the added benefit of the tracing paper is to provide a chance to see the artwork as a mirror image (and fixing it) before committing it to ink on the S-172 Bainbridge.

Oh yeah, Mignola also mentioned that tracing paper works well for plotting out solid black areas. Who am I to argue with Dave Sim and Mike Mignola…

So that’s two areas of my work I am trying to improve on this next book. Will tracing paper help? When you read SPY GUY #1, you can decide for yourself!

  2. Good luck with it. I’ve used it off and on for a few years, but I only do maybe 6 drawings a year…
I got into it since most of my drawing is done on the weekend and I don’t have a photocopier or light-board at home. I scribble on ‘normal’ paper but when it comes to trying to so what I want on the Bristol I tend to like one of the first drawings that seem *impossible* to replicate. And sometimes I like the hands, face and/or posture from several drawings, so with the tracing I can merge them into a composite (of sorts). Unlike Dave (in ohhhhh so many ways), I don’t like the mirror image of my drawing, so then I have to trace my tracing to get lead on the other side, and than get the rubbing of that.

Sheesh, just typing/thinking about all that makes me think I should just steal this light-board from work!

Let us know how you make out.

  3. Will do. With any luck I’ll be down to just one day job by the end of this week, so MAYBE by next week I’ll be able to get started on page 1 of SPY GUY #1.

The problem with S-172 Bainbridge illustration board, is a light box becomes useless.

Hoping this will solve all my problems.
