New Weapon For My Arsenal

In preparation for SPY GUY #1, I picked up a new weapon to add to my arsenal of comic making tools…

Tracing paper! Dave Sim has been talking about his creative process on Cerebus (not to mention selling his roughs on eBay) and it got me thinking about trying to mimic that workflow. On SPUD & HARRY I experimented with transferring my thumbnail roughs onto the illustration board using a pencil rub, and was really pleased with the results. However the added benefit of the tracing paper is to provide a chance to see the artwork as a mirror image (and fixing it) before committing it to ink on the S-172 Bainbridge.

Oh yeah, Mignola also mentioned that tracing paper works well for plotting out solid black areas. Who am I to argue with Dave Sim and Mike Mignola…

So that’s two areas of my work I am trying to improve on this next book. Will tracing paper help? When you read SPY GUY #1, you can decide for yourself!
