MANTRA 4

Chuck Palahniuk quote:

Q.Give us the scenario where you are stuck. You know, where you know where the story wants to go, but it’s not fleshed out the way you thought or something…

Chuck.Okay, let me ask you a question first. Do you ever go into the bathroom, sit on the toilet when you don’t need to take a shit? Do you? Do you ever just sit there when you are like, completely empty, and you sit there and push? No, you don’t. You go eat something. And then you live your life. And then what happens, happens. And it’s the same thing with writing. It’s like, if I don’t have an idea that I’m not absolutely terrified of losing, then I don’t bother to write.*

  1. I’ve always loved that quote! (although there are always the times that you may be a bit constipated, and your turd is 3 inches in diameter, and you have to buckle down and push like you are giving birth, and you know it is going to hurt, but afterwords it’s gonna feel so damn good to get that turd out, and be 5 pounds lighter, so you just have to sit there and push until the job is done). You know?

  3. Ernest Hemingway:
“Don’t get discouraged because there’s a lot of mechanical work to writing…. I rewrote the first part of A Farewell to Arms at least fifty times… The first draft of anything is shit. When you first start to write you get all the kick and the reader gets none, but after you learn to work it’s your objective to convey everything to the reader so that he remembers it not as a story he had read, but something that happened to himself. That’s the true test of writing. When you can do that, the reader gets the kick and you don’t get any….”
